Optimize Your Etsy Shop

Etsy is THE platform for selling handmade products. With millions of users, it is important to carefully track your progress to adjust your listings in order to be one of the top searches.

Just like any other website, your Etsy shop has a unique SEO that is used in order to produce relevant searches for the customer.

Here is my checklist to improve your Etsy shop:

  1. Find relevant, longtail keywords.

Keywords are the most important piece to the Etsy algorithm puzzle and finding the right keywords can be tricky. When developing your keywords, think more so key phrases. For example, don’t put “clay” and “earrings”, do use the phrase “clay earrings.”

  2. Use all 13 tags.

Use ‘em up! But make sure they are relevant. Don’t throw in words that do not match the item or Etsy will not show the item as much.

  3. Use the description wisely.

The first 160 characters of your listing automatically generates the meta description which is what people will find in search engines (Google). It is important to also place the best keywords here.

  4. Add attributes to your listing.

Once you select your category for your product, attributes related to that product will generate such as style, holiday, color, etc. Etsy takes these and uses them as keywords.

  5. Great, quality photos.

As a customer, you want to see all of the details for the item. It is important that the photo is well lit and clear for the viewer to see the details. Use the alt text as another way to sneak in keywords!

  6. Generate backlinks.

Search engines give major bonus points for backlinks to your website, meaning your link appears on another website. There are a few ways that you can achieve backlinks:

-Share items from your store on social media sites where they can be easily re-shared, such as on Pinterest.

-Reach out to other websites and bloggers about your shop to have them feature your listings.

-Request reviews from influencers in exchange for free product.

-Connect with other Etsy shop owners to discuss ways you can do cross-promotion of your products

  7. Provide a great customer experience.

It goes without saying that customer service is very important for every business but especially early on in the life of a new business. Etsy has a system that allows customers to leave a review that will speak volumes to your shop. Offering free shipping and leaving a handwritten note can go a long way!

While it is easy to put this list together, it will take some trial and error. Try testing out different pictures, using different titles, and changing up the keywords.
